She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. “The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Odum comes with a few layers (though most due to the fact that he goes by different names) but his support system is filled with characters you've seen before. There are familiar elements to the story for those who've seen enough spy game thrillers.

Everything else falls into place just fine, but Legends isn't designed to be all that challenging. Only a bit of that is at play here in the first episode as Odum's only given the first seeds of what will surely grow into a much larger issue. As the major identity arc plays out, I can see it all becoming a true test of Sean Bean's range, as he'll have to act out many facets of his own back-catalogue of covers - all while doubting his own sanity. Legends, based on the book "Legends: A Novel of Dissimulation" by Robert Littell, is brought to us by Homeland/24's Howard Gordon and screenwriters Jeffrey Nachmanoff and Mark Bomback. It's a decent enough story that allows Bean to play up a more pathetic, hunched side of himself - complete with glasses, a stutter, and a nasally American voice.

In this series opener, Odum uses one of his established "Legends" to re-enter the ranks of domestic militants bent on a terror attack, with designs of finally catching the group's elusive leader, The Founding Father. Heroes' Ali Larter plays Odum's reluctant-but-capable partner while Veronica Mars' Tina Majorino backs up the team with tech and Steve Harris (The Practice) accommodates as Odum's boss. More adept at espionage than physical dominance. Odum, in the pilot, is more brains than brawn. Though, in either case, Odum's not the hand-to-hand combat expert that either of the operatives in those franchises are. Some might be expecting Legends to be Bean's Taken, but it's more like his Bourne. And that somehow Odum isn't even the person he thinks he is once he clocks out from his various undercover operations. As far as the show itself goes, it'll will run with "(undercover) case of the week" elements accentuated with a conspiracy/identity crisis/brainwash plot that kicks off when a mysterious operative contacts Odum and tells him that Odum's own identity, complete with ex-wife and son, is just another cover. It's explained away very quickly with a line about Odum growing up as a military brat overseas, but he's still not a seamless fit. Play I wouldn't have wanted Bean to play the role with an American accent (though for his undercover work he uses one, and its fun), but his deep Yorkshire dialect does make him a bit of an odd bird for the FBI.
